Mineral SPF, Explained

What is sunscreen, in the simplest terms?
Sunscreen is a topical product you use to help protect skin from the sun’s powerful UV rays.
What is mineral sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreen—also known as physical sunscreen—sits on the skin’s surface and helps protect it by deflecting and scattering UV rays. Mineral sunscreens use mineral active ingredients like Zinc Oxide, and sometimes Titanium Dioxide, to provide that physical protection.
What is chemical sunscreen?
Chemical sunscreen works differently. It helps protect the skin by absorbing UV rays, then converting that energy into a lower-energy form (often described as heat) that releases from the skin. Common chemical UV filters you may see in traditional sunscreen formulas include Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate, and Oxybenzone.
Why would someone choose a mineral sunscreen over a chemical one?
It all comes down to personal preference. For example, what type of formulation is most compatible with your skin type, what your physician may recommend, and even the texture and finish you prefer on a day-to-day basis.
Many people with sensitive or reactive skin gravitate toward mineral formulas, as they can feel more gentle on the skin. Others simply prefer the feel of a mineral sunscreen, the fact that it doesn’t absorb into the skin, or that it can be easier to layer into a routine.

Why did Oak choose a mineral formula?
Protecting the skin from UV exposure and premature signs of aging was the top priority. We also wanted a filter that could deliver reliable broad-spectrum protection while staying gentle enough for daily use. Non-Nano Zinc Oxide checked all those boxes.
A mineral formula also aligns with Oak’s commitment to using the cleanest ingredients possible without compromising performance. Our goal was to create an effective, everyday SPF that feels comfortable on the skin and fits seamlessly into a routine, so you would actually want to use it daily.

THE WEAR TESTING
In a consumer study, 100% said Daily Hydrating Mineral Body Sunscreen was gentle, weightless, and comfortable to wear.*
What’s special about Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, and how does it work to protect the skin?
Non-Nano Zinc Oxide is manufactured so the particles are larger than 100 nanometers, which ensures they remain on the skin’s surface without absorbing. It creates a sheer, breathable veil and offers broad-spectrum UV protection, making it a great option even for sensitive skin types.
What causes a mineral white cast? What makes this formula so wearable and blendable?
As a raw material, Zinc Oxide is naturally white and opaque, working by scattering and reflecting UV. That light-scattering effect can show up as a visible white cast—particularly on deeper skin tones or when a formula doesn’t blend evenly. We formulated ours like a skincare product, with a smooth, hydrating base that helps the Zinc Oxide disperse evenly and lay down a more uniform film on the skin. The result is a texture that blends seamlessly and feels incredibly lightweight.
What does SPF actually refer to, and what does “broad-spectrum” mean?
According to the FDA, SPF refers to a sunscreen’s level of protection against UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburn. In clinical testing, SPF is determined by measuring how much UV exposure it takes to create redness on protected skin versus unprotected skin—then assigning a number based on that difference.
It’s also important to know what SPF doesn’t tell you. The SPF on the label assumes you’re applying enough product and reapplying as needed. Most people under-apply, which means they’re not getting the full SPF value. Higher SPFs do provide more UVB protection (up to SPF 50), but no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays.
“Broad-spectrum” means the sunscreen has also demonstrated protection against UVA rays. UVA rays contribute to visible signs of skin aging and can impact skin health over time. When a sunscreen is labeled “broad spectrum” it indicates protection against both UVA and UVB.

In a consumer study, 96% said it instantly absorbed into the skin without leaving residue or a greasy feel.*
What does reef-safe mean?
Reef-safe generally means a sunscreen is made without certain chemical filters, like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, that have raised concerns for coral reef health. Oak’s Daily Hydrating Mineral Body Sunscreen is a mineral formula—made without chemical UV filters and using Non-Nano Zinc Oxide as its active filter. Because Non-Nano Zinc Oxide is designed to sit on the skin’s surface, it’s considered a reef-safe choice.
Where does mineral SPF belong in a body care routine? Are there any best practices for layering to ensure proper protection?
The easiest way to incorporate it is as the last step of your morning body routine. Apply body moisturizer first—we recommend Luminous Body Lotion or Dew Body Oil—then apply SPF on top. The two layers should blend seamlessly. For best protection, apply evenly all over, and be especially generous on exposed areas. Reapply as needed, especially after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
Who is mineral sunscreen best suited for?
All skin types—but for those with reactionary or extra sensitive skin, it’s always best to consult with a dermatologist or licensed physician.
