For Saltyface co-founder Bethany Menzel, a glowing complexion is about far more than looking sun-kissed—it's about a curated approach to natural beauty that feels authentic and effortless. Today, we hear from Bethany to learn more about her secrets to achieving glowy skin while balancing all that life has to offer.

Tell us about the inspiration behind Saltyface.
I’ve always felt the most like myself after a day on the beach, that feeling of bare, sunkissed, salty skin—nothing beats it for me. My husband David and I set out to create actually clean products that recreated the look of a day in the sun.
What does clean beauty mean to you?
Clean beauty for us is not compromising on our high standard of ingredients. If any ingredient poses a risk to your health it’s not worth putting on your skin, and you won’t find it in our products. We try to keep our formulas as simple as possible, a short ingredient list makes us happy!
How do you balance motherhood with work?
It hasn’t always been balanced. For the first two years of the brand’s life, I really poured my heart and (too much) time into it, to the point where I felt so unbalanced I had to take a step back and focus more on my family. After letting the pendulum swing in the other direction I’ve entered a place of balance that I’m excited about. That is mostly due to the wonderful team we’ve pieced together at Saltyface who have really embodied our vision behind the brand in the work they do.
In this season of life, what makes you feel the most beautiful?
It’s always been the ocean. I actually have a folder on my phone titled “Happy Me” and every photo in there is a not-so-flattering selfie of me post-beach with wet hair and no makeup. I like to keep these memories just because they make me happy, but they also remind me that moments when I feel truly beautiful aren’t about how I look.
Tell us about your typical morning routine.
I sleep with the drapes open so I can naturally wake up early, usually at 6:30 am. The first things I do are, apply my face oil, boil water, and pour a cup of green tea. Once my tea is steeped, I sit outside in an Adirondack chair for about 30 minutes, reading, journaling, and praying. It’s my favorite time of day.
How do you take care of your skin in the summer?
I spend a lot of time outside and I surf, so hats and SPF are a super important part of my routine. The saltwater does wonderful things for your skin but it can also be drying, so applying oil morning and night and using a hydrating mist throughout the day are the staples of my summer routine.
Any tips for prepping your skin for Saltyface?
I like to prep my face by massaging with an oil to cleanse my skin for 3-5 minutes. It's a long time, but it really cleans out your pores without stripping your skin. I follow that with a steaming hot washcloth. If my skin has been dry I will apply moisturizer before my tanning water, but most of the time I just apply the tanning water since it has so many hydrating and skin-benefiting ingredients. Having your skin evenly exfoliated and hydrated before applying will ensure a very natural and even developed color.
What’s sparking joy for you lately?
I’m a summer girl, no other season compares, so everything that goes along with that brings me joy. Beach days, bike rides, ocean dips, lake trips, a cooler packed with fruit, iced americanos.

Your first beauty memory: Before I was allowed to wear makeup, my mom let me use clear mascara. I still remember putting that on for the first time and 20 years later, I bought another bottle.

Recipe you can’t stop cooking: Chocolate Tahini Cookies–it’s been a solid 10 months that there has consistently been a batch in my freezer.

Three desert-island skincare staples: Face Oil, Liquid Bronzer, and Hydrating Mist.

Most underrated beauty tip or tool: I have to say faux freckles–don’t knock it till you try it!

Song you’re playing on repeat: Scared to Start by Michael Marcagi.
